Devious Devices: Technology We Can't Live Without

Over the past decade, mobile devices have gone from cool gadgets, to irreplaceable parts of everyday living. It has even come to a point where those who lack a smartphone are excluded from social groups and even certain lines of work, though not necessarily out of malice towards Luddites, but simply due to the fact that these are the platforms on which we communicate. Additionally, with the proliferation of screens you can carry in your pocket, a number of other fringe-accessories are now must-haves. Take a look at how new technology has come to change and grow into our daily lifes.

The Smartphone
These days, the question isn't whether to get a smartphone, it’s which smartphone are you going to get. After purchasing your first smartphone, it’s hard to imagine how you functioned before you had a map, the internet, your music, and a calendar in your pocket. The constant connection goes beyond the personal applications, though. Many jobs that aren't just made easier by having a smartphone, but are actually impossible to do without one. These aren't just high-paying business or marketing type jobs, but things as simple as taxi services and managing odd-jobs. Entrepreneurs are using smartphones as point-of-sale systems, opting for Paypal over other credit card service fees.

Tablets
When Apple rolled out the iPad, many scoffed at a seemingly needless piece of technology. How would you compute without a keyboard? Now, there are schools that distribute tablets to their students and mobile app developer is a career path. The touchscreen is the preferred method of input, and children are learning how to use them at very early ages. A tablet has all the speed and most of the portability of a smartphone, merely trading the phone for a slightly larger screen. And, with all those other methods of connectivity, it’s not a bad exchange.

Cases
Every market creates a sub-market. Touchscreens smudge, and devices are fragile and expensive. Some sort of case and protective screen is practically a required purchase for any device, and this is where the marketing towards personalization really shines. You only have to go to cellphonecases to see how many different styles and types of protection there is. Cases advertised to every different kind of personality and lifestyle.

These devices are having drastic effects on how we interact with each other on personal and economic levels. Some of these changes are positive, as connectivity lends itself well to efficiency. However, it’s pretty easy to get glued to a screen and forget the world around you. Where will our devices take us next?

Five Things To Consider When Selecting a Tablet

There are several reasons why you should purchase a tablet computer. They are the perfect balance between mobile phones and personal computers. If you have never owned a tablet, you might be overwhelmed by all your options. Here are five things you should consider when selecting a tablet.

Daily Use
How will you use your tablet? Will you only use your tablet to check your e-mail? Do you want to watch movies and TV shows on your tablet? Will you take your tablet with you everywhere you go? The answers to these questions will help you narrow down your tablet choices.

Internet Connection
You will need an Internet connection to use most of the features on your tablet. You should make sure the tablet you purchase has at a minimum WIFI access. If you already have high-speed Internet access at your home, you should consider purchasing a tablet that can connect to Internet with a 3G connection. You should also purchase a 3G data plan if you will be using your tablet for business while you are away from home.

Screen Size
You should choose a tablet that has a large screen. You might not want to get the biggest screen available, but you should choose a screen that is large enough to display web pages clearly.

Compare Prices
The features a tablet has determines its price. If you are on a budget, you should look into buying an inexpensive tablet with basic features. If you are not limited by the amount of money you can spend on a tablet, you should purchase a tablet that has advanced features and a data plan.

Weight
When you are looking at android tablets and Samsung galaxy phones from Bell.ca, you should look for lightweight products. Bulky tablets and phones are inconvenient when you cannot use both of your hands. You should choose a phone and a tablet that you can easily hold with one hand.

When you research before you shop, you can find a tablet that has everything you are looking for at a price you can afford. When you get your new tablet, you should read the guide book to learn how to use all of its features. When you take the time to learn how to use and properly care for your tablet, you can ensure that your tablet will stay in good condition for several years.

Sony or Samsung – The Tablet of the Year

While 2013 seems to be a year of the coming and going of smartphones, tablets have kept a low profile this year as compared to 2012 which was marked by the launch of several excellent tablets. Nevertheless, 2013 has seen the launch of some excellent tablets. Here’s a look at what there is in the market for potential tablet buyers.

Sony Xperia Tablet Z
After the success of it’s smartphone, Sony has launched it’s Xperia Z tablet. Bringing a similar design, attributes and hardware, it is 10.1 inch tablet device. It has the a similar revamped Sony UI software overlay along with the Android Jelly Beans. Same as the Xperia smartphone, the stunning exterior build is very angular. Approaching the minimalistic side, the back panel is extremely clean with only the Xperia logo in the middle the camera in the top right corner. Having a matte finish, the rest of the body is made from premium polycarbonates.

A very thin tablet, it measures around 6.9mm. the bezel around the display is very narrow accounting for it’s slimness. It does, however, compromise on your grip of the laptop. For a 10.1 inch screened tablet, the picture quality is very good. There are 224 pixels per inch. It is powered by Sony’s Mobile Bravia Engine 2 which contributes to excellent contrast and picture depth.

With a 2GB of RAM, it has a powerful quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 1.5GHz chip with an Adreno 320 graphics processing unit (GPU). It has a 16GB on-board storage space, whereas it has microSD capability of cards upto 64GB.

Other feature of Xperia Z tablet include Wi-Fi, NFC, an infrared port, microUSB, Bluetooth, GPS, MHL TV-out, DLNA and Wi-Fi Hotspot. The slate is also water and dust resistant as certified by IP57. The 8.1 megapixel camera and a front facer of 2.2 megapixel. There is also a data variant with 3G and 4G support.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0
Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 is a smaller version of Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1, just lighter, thinner and more portable than the latter. Galaxy 8.0 is giving the same stylus feature as Galaxy 10.1. it also has the same 1034 levels of pressure sensitivity as the other recent Note products that gives a great experience for those practicing handwriting or drawing. There is also an in-built handwriting software thatnot only recognizes your handwriting but also converts the words you have written into typed text.

Another feature is that the tablet will now register the stylus hovering over the screen and one can activate the capacitive touch keys with it too.

The display is of 8 inches with 1280x800 pixel resolution at 189ppi which produces sharp and colorful images. There is an on-board storage of 16 or 32GB with a microSD support for cards that is upto 32GB. The processor used in Samsung Galaxy 8.0 is Samsung’s Exynos 4412 quad-core chip clocked at 1.6GHz with 2GB of RAM and a Mali-400MP quad-core GPU.

Connectivity include the full range of Wi-Fi cababilities, GPS, Bluetooth, infrared, microUSB and MHL. There is also a 3G and 4G LTE capable version and the Note 8.0 can also be used with a SIM card for making and receiving calls or texts.

Five Things You Didn't Know Your Tablet Could Do

If you own an Android tablet, you most likely utilize it in many different ways throughout the course of a given day. However, most people aren't using their tablets to their full potential. If you aren't quite an expert with your Android tablet, you may be missing out on some functionality. Here are five things that you may not have known your Android tablet could do.

1. Control Your TV
With your Android tablet, it's possible to control both your television and your DVR with an app called XBMC. You can use it like a remote to scroll through channels, control the volume, look at DVR recordings, and do anything else that you could with a TV remote. With this functionality, you can stop worrying about where the remote is. You can put it in one of the quality leather iPad cases out there and have a great looking remote control for the living room.

2. Monitor the House
Your Android tablet can also be used as a type of home monitoring tool. You can integrate it in with a security system to look at your home camera feeds and turn on and off the system. One example of an app that can do this is the SimpliSafe app.

3. Send and Receive Texts
You don't need to have a data plan for your Android to be able to send and receive text messages. By using an app called Tablet Talk, you can connect your tablet to your mobile phone account and send and receive texts from the same phone number.

4. Control an Aircraft
Your Android can actually work as a remote control for a remote controlled airplane or toy drone. You simply download the appropriate app for the remote controlled plane and then use it to start flying. It's really pretty simple to use and you'll be surprised just how well it can work. I-Helicopter is an app that allows you to control an RC helicopter.

5. Perform Vehicle Diagnostics
One of the functions that you can enable with your tablet is to perform vehicle diagnostic tests. By getting the Delphi app called Vehicle Diagnostics, you will be able to diagnose exactly what is wrong with your vehicle. You install a simple device in the car and then it sends signals to your tablet. It's really easy to use, and it can help you figure out what's wrong with your car if you're getting an error code. You can even use it to unlock your car door.

As technology continues to advance, expect even more amazing functionality from your Android tablet. It is already an almost essential gadget to have, and it will be even more so in the future.

Five Must-Have Technologies for People Stuck in the Stone Age

As technology continues to make huge leaps towards the future, consumers are left with two choices. Either adapt to keep pace with change, or be left behind in a virtual Stone Age. From home entertainment to getting to work, there are five must-have technologies that will define the way people live their lives in the not-so-distant future.

Smartphones
The days of pressing the old keypad for 10 minutes to send a short text message are gone. Today's smartphones make communication, social interaction and navigation easier and faster than ever.

Devices like the Google Nexus, Samsung Galaxy S3 and Droid DNA have made it possible for everyone to carry powerful hardware right in their pocket.

Tablet Computers
With larger screens and more room for hardware, tablet computers offer the same functionality of smartphones with less limitations. The Nexus 7, iPad and Kindle Fire defined the tablet market during 2012, and will continue to do so throughout 2013.
Within two short years, mobile users will account for half of the Internet's traffic. Smartphones and tablets will eventually replace the conventional home computer. As the ability to pack more powerful hardware in a smaller area increases, tablets will be the first mobile device to match the computing power of a desktop PC.

Streaming Video Devices
From D-Link's Movienite Plus to smart integration of televisions, streaming video will replace the conventional ways people enjoy home entertainment.
Instead of changing channels to see what's available, viewers can choose exactly what they want to watch without commercial interruptions.

Home Automation
Automated homes are quickly becoming a definitive trend of this decade. With smart security systems and home appliances featuring mobile integration, homeowners can operate every major aspect of their household via a smartphone or tablet.

The ability to monitor surveillance cameras from anywhere and be notified of intrusions and fires make home automation one a must-have technology for homeowners in 2013.

Hybrid Transportation
With mobile computing and home automation, drivers will be able to ensure their home is safe at all times. Despite these advantages, the price of gas and impact on the environment is crucial to our future.

Hybrid cars and trucks will continue to become more common. By reducing fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions, going hybrid kills two birds with one stone.

Although other impressive technologies are making their way to the forefront of consumer industry, mobile computing, home automation and streaming devices will be top trends throughout the next few years. If today's consumers want to stay ahead of the technological Stone Age, these are five must-have technologies for 2013.

Content Aggregators: Create a Visual Experience Just for You on Your Tablet

With all the recent innovations in tablet displays, the best tablet (whether by Lenovo, Apple, or Samsung) will feature a screen that is better than ever. If there is one type of app that will change the way you interact with your tablet and allow you to get the most of its beautiful screen, it’s a visual content aggregator. Instead of checking your social networks, news sites, and blogs site by site to get the latest updates, visual content aggregators compile all your interests into one visually stunning, magazine-like package that is easy to use and automatically updated.

Until recently, popular content aggregators like Feedly focused solely on collecting text-based articles via RSS. We have also seen social media aggregators like tweetdeck and hootsuite that process a great deal of information for so called “power users” of sites like Facebook and Twitter. But with the rise of photo-rich sites like Pinterest, finding creative ways to display visual content has begun to take precedence. So now there’s a new type of content aggregator on the scene, and it’s visual.

The most popular of these new visual content aggregator apps are Google’s Currents and Flipboard, and they excel at creating incredible visual experiences because they don’t have to do anything else: all the photos, features, and articles come from aggregated sites. So while organizations like The Atlantic magazine, Reuters or National Geographic are hard at work creating things for you to read and publishing stunning photos, the people behind Google Currents and Flipboard are focused on one and only one thing: providing the most visually compelling and intuitive platform for enjoying your favorite content.

Google Currents – available on all Android devices, phones and tablets – is as powerful as it is intuitive. That’s saying a lot. You’ll discover this by subscribing to any number of websites within minutes of downloading the app, each free of charge. The next step – seeing how Google Currents has put everything together for you in magazine-like fashion – is as visually stunning as it is easy to use. Finding each of your subscriptions neatly tucked into the left side of the screen, your eye is quickly drawn to the high-resolution photo in the center of your screen. You soon discover that switching from one publication is as easy as a quick swipe to the right, while scrolling downwards will allow you to see the full range of content available from your chosen sites. You’ll be amazed at the visual customizations possible with Google Currents and will easily be able to produce the best tablet browsing experience for you, no matter your interests.

Flipboard is Google Currents’ more social cousin. One of its coolest features is its integration with your Facebook other social media profiles. Most people who check either of the social networks often are used to having to open a new tab or window on their browser if they want to see what their friends are up to. That’s no longer the case with Flipboard. The app treats your friends’ updates and photos as if they were content on any other website you might want to subscribe to, mixing them in with the news articles, photos and recommended content the app already regularly delivers to you. The app is available on iPad as well as on Android devices and has recently been optimized for iPad mini.

Even though Flipboard has its drawbacks – downloading content for offline reading require a third-party app, for instance – the digital magazine experience it offers makes it clear that the recent transition from textual, RSS feed content aggregators to visual content aggregators was a welcome evolution. One thing that’s certain is that Flipboard’s gorgeous visual layout will have you falling in love with your tablet all over again.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 Vs Apple iPad Mini

The tablet market is witnessing no dearth of competition these days. Two of the most watched out for rivals are corporate giants Apple and Samsung. The two manufactures are fighting hard to capture a larger market share that the other. Moreover, the two companies manufacture only quality products. This makes it all the more difficult to decide which one is the better of the two.

Talking of tablets, Apple has launched Apple iPad Mini while Samsung unveiled the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) this year. In terms of quality, specifications and features the two are good and they stand shoulder to shoulder in competition with each other. However, we decided to compare the two slates. When we put them along side each other, here’s what we found.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 Vs. Apple iPad Mini
To begin with Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 looks like it is the Note 2’s clone. Note 8.0 slate is Samsung Galaxy Note 2 with a screen size of 8-inches. Some share the opinion that in terms of its size, the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 resembled the iPad Mini. The truth however is that the Note 8.0 looks like a smaller iPad Mini.

The body of the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 makes it look and feel like a premium gadget. Plastic has been used to make this device. The curved corners and its glossy finish gives this gadget a neat look. However, this device weighs heavier than the iPad Mini. The Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 weighs about 338 grams or 11.9 ounce. This device comes with a screen resolution of 1280 * 800. Higher the pixel density means images will be noticeably sharper. We tested the screen of the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 and we noticed that the screen provided an excellent view from almost any viewing angle. One thing that the screen lacks is Super AMOLED display. You can use the S Pen to write on the screen of this device. This device being as slim as just 8mm and this makes it comfortably slip into a bag.

In terms of performance Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 is top class. The speed of this device is impressive. Thanks to the 1.6GHz quad-core processor that powers this device. This device also comes with features like radios for WiFi a/b/g/n, GB RAM, A-GPS, Bluetooth 4.0 and an internal storage capacity of up to 32GB. However, storage capacity of this device can be expanded using a microSD expansion. This device runs on a powerful 4,600mAh battery.

All in all Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 is one of the perfect competitors for the iPad Mini.  Here’s a closer look at the specifications and features of the latter.

In terms of design, build and physical appearance iPad Mini wins the race hands-down. Thanks to the high-quality materials that are used in its making. This is a premium product by all means. iPad Mini is as light as just 10.8 ounce and is as thin as just 7.2mm. This goes to say that it is half the weight of the regular iPad. It is impossible to hold this tablet without letting your fingers touch the screen. Apple had foreseen this and to avoid accidents of any kind the company had developed the ‘resist thumb recognition’ technology. Screen resolution of iPad Mini is 1,024 x 768. Users only wished that the iPad Mini came with better sharpness.

iPad Mini is simply superb in terms of its performance. Thanks to the 1GHz A5 processor that this device runs on. This device has been updated to the 6.1 version of iOS. Apple’s virtual assistance Siri can be accessed on this device. iPad Mini comes with wireless networking support and Bluetooth option. There is a 3.5mm audio connector that is situated on the top of this device.

If you are passionate about photography, do not expect too much from the iPad Mini’s camera. This device comes packed with a 5MP iSight camera at the rear. This camera comes with advanced features like backside illumination that improves the quality of images that you take. However, this camera comes minus features like HDR mode and flash. iPad Mini also comes with a 1.2MP FaceTime camera.  You can own an iPad Mini with a storage capacity of 16, 32 or 64GB. Storage capacity of this device is non-expandable.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 and iPad Mini come packed with all the features that you to have on your tablet. Nevertheless, it is difficult to come to a conclusion about which is the best of the two.

iPad mini vs Nexus: Which one should you buy?

Introduction
iPad mini is from Apple and Nexus is from Google and its partner Asus. Both are the dominating tablets and reviews are there to beat one another. In the technology market always cold war exists between the tablets. Let us see in detail.

Hardware
In terms of hardware, Nexus has a quad-core Tegra 3 processor and IPS display is of a 7-inch at 1280x800 resolution. Additional features include NFC, Bluetooth 3.0, and GPS built-in. Recently HSPA+ option is added in high end model. Camera got 1.2 megapixel which is placed on front and it is easy to hold because on the back of camera is covered with plastic. Speaker has come up with 8 or 16 GB of storage and recently got 32 GB. Battery life is great that it has approximately withstand 9 hours for video.
The iPad mini is the mix of iPod and iPad in 4:3 screen ratio. It has 7.9-inch IPS display at 1024x768 resolution and the back side is aluminium. It has Apple A5 processor. Additional features are compatibility with GSM and CDMA as well as HSPA+, DC-HSPA+. Ipad mini is available in black or white, and in versions range from 16, 32, or 64GB. Battery life is for 10 hours and amazingly one can watch video.
In the hardware side iPad mini is the winner for its elegance design and manufacturing. On the other hand Nexus 7 is the winner on power and screen density.

Software
The Nexus 7 possess Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and awaiting to get updated to Android 4.2. Jelly Bean is the best OS for phones and since Nexus is getting considered as tablet, it is not well suited for Nexus. Google has put steps to improve interface and performance but while compared to iPad Mini, still it does not win in it. Google is making the apps to communicate with each other.
Ios 6 is there in iPad mini and in terms of polish and consistency they are dominating the world. iOS 6 has elegant optimized tablet interface in which one can get multiple columns. Safari is the best mobile browser and even non technical users can handle that easily by its user friendly approach.
In terms of software, iPad Mini still dominates over Nexus. But at the same time, one's need is ready to use, iOS is the winner. If one prefers to configure and work the way out, Android is the winner.

Services
Services wise Nexus dominates as Google is the dominating search engine and it is highly supported service provider but no feature is from Apple. At the same time iPad Mini has everything for Apple and also from Google.
Regarding customer service, iPad Mini is the best as even non technical user can get used up with it. But for Nexus, even technical users sometimes find difficult for it. But Google cloud users prefer to go to Nexus only.

Content
Apple's content are vast and includes iTunes books, movies etc., and alternatively can go for Amazon, Netflix which are all compatible with iPhone.
Google Play is the content provider for Nexus and it is more preferable for US users and outside US users can prefer iPad Mini.

Price
Nexus is an excellent choice in terms of price as for 16 GB it costs around $199 only. And for 32GB it costs $249 and for 32GB + HSPA+, it is $299
But iPad mini costs $329 only for 16GB itself and the rest ranges more. $429 for 32GB, and $529 for 64GB. Additional price of $130 for HSPA+/LTE.

Conclusion
Ultimately the hardware, software, price and services determine the best to buy either iPad Mini or Nexus. It is the user's choice and users who want slightly higher screen density in fewer prices that is $299, Nexus is the best choice. The iPad is similar with tablets and who want to buy in higher ranges definitely can go for it.

Secrets Behind Google Nexus 7 Tablet

The newest tablet on the market, the Google Nexus 7, is making a splash in the market right now. Tablets in total seem to getting more and more popular because of the multiple uses they afford users, and the affordability of them when compared to smart phones and lap top computers. There was a time when consumers seemed to want smaller and smaller mobile devices, but as the technology has advanced, it seems as if the trend is going to other way. Instead, consumers now seem to want an all-in-one encompassing device, in which they can access the internet and mobile apps, while also being able to send e-mails, make phone calls and do everything else that the internet will allow, such as listening to music and watching movies and other streaming videos.

Sales trends for the Google Nexus 7 tablet so far
According to most sales reports, Google is due to make at least a modest profit on the Google Nexus 7 tablet that they released earlier this year. The Google Nexus 7 tablet only costs $199 and is 8 GB, which is a great deal when compared to the iPad, and other tablet devices that are similar to Google’s newest one. Google was a late entry into the tablet market, but sales show they are going to be a possible competitor well into the future, if they keep it up. The main competitor for the Google Nexus 7, and the reason why Google created it in the first place, is the Kindle Fire, which had been selling like hotcakes. Therefore, Google could not refuse to jump on the tablet bandwagon. The Google Nexus 7 tablet has many of the same features as the Kindle Fire, but Google sweetened the pot by adding a camera and the features that the Kindle Fire currently does not have, but it is likely that the Kindle Fire will catch on to Google’s additions and offer them as well in future models of the tablet device.

The features of the Google Nexus 7 tablet
Google created it especially to be used with Google Play, which is Google’s newest revamped mp3 and app marketplace. You can buy ebooks, music and videos using the Google app. The device also comes with all the popular Google apps, such as Gmail, the Google Docs app and a list of many others. The possibilities are endless with the tablet, and it is perfect for anyone who already uses Google apps at home on their personal computers.

Google Nexus 7 tablet tips and tricks
There are a ton of ways to customize that Google Nexus 7 tablet, that have rarely been seen in other tablets of its kind. You can customize the home screen widgets, and the apps, among many other things. It was pretty much made to be used for media reasons.
