Sony or Samsung – The Tablet of the Year


While 2013 seems to be a year of the coming and going of smartphones, tablets have kept a low profile this year as compared to 2012 which was marked by the launch of several excellent tablets. Nevertheless, 2013 has seen the launch of some excellent tablets. Here’s a look at what there is in the market for potential tablet buyers.


Sony Xperia Tablet Z
After the success of it’s smartphone, Sony has launched it’s Xperia Z tablet. Bringing a similar design, attributes and hardware, it is 10.1 inch tablet device. It has the a similar revamped Sony UI software overlay along with the Android Jelly Beans. Despite the market has now been flooded with spy software for Android devices, the popularity of Xperia Z has not decreased.

Same as the Xperia smartphone, the stunning exterior build is very angular. Approaching the minimalistic side, the back panel is extremely clean with only the Xperia logo in the middle the camera in the top right corner. Having a matte finish, the rest of the body is made from premium polycarbonates.

A very thin tablet, it measures around 6.9mm. the bezel around the display is very narrow accounting for it’s slimness. It does, however, compromise on your grip of the laptop. For a 10.1 inch screened tablet, the picture quality is very good. There are 224 pixels per inch. It is powered by Sony’s Mobile Bravia Engine 2 which contributes to excellent contrast and picture depth.

With a 2GB of RAM, it has a powerful quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 1.5GHz chip with an Adreno 320 graphics processing unit (GPU). It has a 16GB on-board storage space, whereas it has microSD capability of cards upto 64GB.   
   
Other feature of Xperia Z tablet include Wi-Fi, NFC, an infrared port, microUSB, Bluetooth, GPS, MHL TV-out, DLNA and Wi-Fi Hotspot. The slate is also water and dust resistant as certified by IP57. The 8.1 megapixel camera and a front facer of 2.2 megapixel. There is also a data variant with 3G and 4G support.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 
Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 is a smaller version of Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1, just lighter, thinner and more portable than the latter. Galaxy 8.0 is giving the same stylus feature as Galaxy 10.1. it also has the same 1034 levels of pressure sensitivity as the other recent Note products that gives a great experience for those practicing handwriting or drawing. There is also an in-built handwriting software thatnot only recognizes your handwriting but also converts the words you have written into typed text.

Another feature is that the tablet will now register the stylus hovering over the screen and one can activate the capacitive touch keys with it too.

The display is of 8 inches with 1280x800 pixel resolution at 189ppi which produces sharp and colorful images. There is an on-board storage of 16 or 32GB with a microSD support for cards that is upto 32GB. The processor used in Samsung Galaxy 8.0 is Samsung’s Exynos 4412 quad-core chip clocked at 1.6GHz with 2GB of RAM and a Mali-400MP quad-core GPU.

Connectivity include the full range of Wi-Fi cababilities, GPS, Bluetooth, infrared, microUSB and MHL. There is also a 3G and 4G LTE capable version and the Note 8.0 can also be used with a SIM card for making and receiving calls or texts.
